The age difference between two people is the calendar interval between their dates of birth. It remains constant as both people grow older. A reliable calculation first identifies the earlier birth date, then counts complete years, complete months, and remaining days until the later birth date.
Start with the two birth dates
Write both dates clearly and verify them. The person with the earlier date of birth is older. If both dates are identical, the age difference is zero even if the people were born at different times of day, because a date-only calculator does not use birth times.
The order in which the names are entered should not change the size of the gap. A good age difference tool may change which person it labels older, but it should return the same nonnegative interval after the two inputs are swapped.
Count years, months, and days
Suppose Person 1 was born on March 12, 1990 and Person 2 was born on July 25, 1993.
- Three complete years from March 12, 1990 reach March 12, 1993.
- Four complete months reach July 12, 1993.
- Thirteen remaining days reach July 25, 1993.
The exact age difference is 3 years, 4 months, and 13 days.
This calculation compares the two birth dates directly. It does not calculate each person’s current age and subtract the displayed answers. Direct comparison is clearer and avoids introducing today as an unnecessary third date.
Total days and weeks
The same interval can also be expressed in total days. Dividing total days by seven gives complete weeks and remaining days. These totals are useful for a raw-duration view, while the years-months-days result preserves the calendar structure.
Do not convert years to 365 days or months to 30 days before adding them. Leap years and varying month lengths make that estimate diverge from the actual date interval.
Month-end differences
When the older person’s birth day does not exist in a target month, a date tool must apply a rule. Age Calculator Tool clamps the target to that month’s last valid day. The site applies the same rule to chronological age and age difference results, so examples and calculators remain consistent.
What an age gap does not tell you
An age difference is a date fact. It does not measure compatibility, maturity, health, authority, or the quality of a relationship. It also does not establish whether an activity is legal or appropriate; those questions depend on context and current rules.
Use the age difference calculator to compare two dates. The tool identifies the older person, displays the detailed gap, and lets you copy or print a result containing both input dates. If you want to audit the output, the same calendar-anchor checks in how to verify an age calculator result apply to the interval between the two birthdays.
